FIELD NOTES: Nature vs. Netflix: Has Comfort Killed Our Wild Side?
Minimalism: Your Key to Freedom.
"It is my belief that when people start building fulfilling lives, they will discard one that is primarily tied to owning stuff. They will come to realise it has been stealing their freedom/mobility to think and act big"
During my travels in places like KwaZulu-Natal (Eastern Cape, South Africa), I met local people being disconnected from wildlife. For most of our time, society has been steering us away from nature—especially people who are accustomed to living in cities, offering nothing more than parks and an abundance of concrete.
My connection with nature only started coming back once I travelled around the world, and could not believe the beauty I was seeing. A wake up call, saying we need more impact storytellers to educate and change the perspectives of people.
Great communicators such as Oliver Dauert are also referring to "a short-sighted shareholder focus," being one of the reasons—alongside humans who have embedded the habit of living in abundance.
A lot of creators in the likes of Dan Koe, Andrew Huberman, Julian Pistone and so forth, need to put their heads together, developing value systems that encourage and sustain this harmony (amongst humans & nature) we so aspire to achieve, and need.
Lastly, It is my belief that when people start building fulfilling lives, they will discard one that is primarily tied to owning stuff. They will come to realise it has been stealing their freedom/mobility to think and act big.
I see it like this: If you are reinventing yourself, everything you own becomes a drag. Part of your new journey, will involve a lot of self-education that will overwhelm you. During these moments, you will start disliking most of the stuff you own, and discard naturally. That's how I own close to nothing today, except a backpack—including all the tools required to create impactful stories. Back in the day, when I worked in the corporate world, you can't imagine the kind of hoarder I was.
If you are not there yet, it is a great practice to free one day and walk around your house or room. Here you'll notice subtle emotions. Anything that feels bad, or hasn't been serving you for a long time, sell or gift away the item. There are many sources out there like Sellpy. If not, make someone happier who actually needs it.
More stuff equals less focus, or a cluttered mind that does not know where it’s steering towards. You basically are what you own. That being said, How will you create more freedom in your life?
Trust the hunch. Find the story.
