FIELD NOTES: Those That Haste Stumble, Whereas the Patient One Continues
—what I learned from the "Camel Man" atop the Dunes in Deadvlei.
Perched atop Namibia’s dunes, a grey-bearded man carrying a wooden stick, gazes at me with intense eyes. As I catch my breath during the ascent, he says, "Take it slow, one step at a time, just like a camel does," before continuing his way.
Amid everything, I realise the goal isn't about reaching the top, and that I have spent little to no time appreciating my surroundings. It doesn't make sense to hasten up a mountain only to pause once more—while the man who walks like a "camel" continues to pass me by at a steady and relaxed pace: What about those who strive to achieve their purpose or dream? Just think, if they rush through the process like I did on this dune, they may miss out on the entire journey and all its beauty. I have come to understand that the summit isn't the goal; rather the journey itself—which ultimately rewards everyone in due time…
Now imagine if we would all move gracefully to heights like the "camel man." His radiant smile, consistent pace and infectious energy inspire those around him. I have a feeling he's ready for another hike today. Among us "fast adventurers," it seems there is little room left to conquer.
In sum, here's my conclusion: Those who hurry often back down, while the patient ones, or the "camel man," continue on their path. It indicates that we should respect the passage of time, and find joy in the journey as we progress towards our ambitions. Too often, the emphasis is placed on reaching a destination. The way we set our timelines/expectations for certain objectives, can greatly affect our experience, but most importantly, our resilience.
In sum, I'd like to convey the following:
Beautiful things take time.
Remain conscious about where your purpose is leading you, and its bigger why.
Learn from creators; a piece of advice can go a long way, much like the guidance from the "camel man."
Be system-oriented instead of goal-oriented. It enables you to shape a purpose with more gratitude, consistency, and persistence.
Don't dwell on results. Instead, cling to guiding principles as you shape your purpose in a climate that will forever be uncertain.
Trust the hunch. Find the story.
